Skeleton
The framework of the human body and the foundation to understanding proportion is the skeleton. An understanding of anatomical structure starts with the skeleton, the landmarks of the body, joints for mobility and connection points for tendons and muscle tissues
Cast Drawing – Value & Form Logic
This project introduces students to the atelier tradition of cast drawing through sustained, deliberate observation. Working from a single plaster cast under a consistent, controlled light source, students will study how light describes form and how complex surfaces can be understood through proportion, plane changes, and value relationships. The emphasis is placed on accuracy, patience, and visual discipline, rather than speed or expressive interpretation.
Portraiture
The human face and its likeness play a critical role in how we understand and connect with the figure. Capturing the subtleties of proportional differences, shapes, and expressions is both a technical and creative challenge. This project will refine your ability to accurately render a person’s likeness through the application of straight-line construction and proportional measuring techniques.
Shape design
Developing the ability to replicate and adapt stylization and shape design in to your work is essential in developing control and a professional practice. For many artists in a professional setting we find ourselves working in a studio defined style and have to adapt to the working style and shape design defined by the project. In this project we are seeking to develop that ability and adapt to defined parameters in shape language and stylization.
Narrative figure – Figure and Environment
This project serves as the culminating study of the semester, bringing together proportion, anatomy, shape design, and stylization developed across the previous projects and applying them to the construction of narrative. Working from direct observation and reference, students place one or more figures within a considered environment, using framing, lighting, and staging to direct how an audience reads a story within a single image. The emphasis shifts from figure alone to figure-in-context: how pose, setting, and composition work together to communicate meaning.
